Cooking with Farm Fresh Veggies: Cabbage stir-fried with Capsicum & Green Peas

This is a weekly series on cooking with vegetables fresh from my parents’ backyard

I had been waiting for the lovely heads of cabbage to mature enough for us to pluck them. I’d look into the small 5ft by 5ft patch that had these heads of cabbage growing slowly and steadily every other day. I did this alternate day routine religiously for close to a fortnight. After a surprise week long visit from family friends, I forgot all about the cabbage patch.

The gardener comes every Saturday to tend to the little kitchen garden and pulls out vegetables that we left untouched. The last few months we’ve had a good harvest with enough veggies to pass on to neighbours and friends, in addition to what we keep aside for our own consumption. In fact, the produce of white radish and spinach was so good that the gardener too would take back a big bunch of each when he came.

Coming back to the cabbage patch, last Saturday, the gardener was beaming a big smile when he knocked at the door at the rear portion of the house where the kitchen garden is. Ma announced he had an arm full of lovely light green cabbage heads plucked fresh from the patch and given a nice bath.

We HAD to cook cabbage that day. I’m all for contrast in food, as are my ma and pa. I’ve taken the style of adding some green peas or capsicum to any white, light green or red/orange vegetable. Like my father says, “Foods that colour contrast well, taste good too.”

And so,

Stir Fried Cabbage with Capsicum & Green Peas

Ingredients:

Cabbage – 1 (medium)

Capsicum – 1 (medium)

Fresh green peas – ¼ cup (shelled)

Oil – 1 tsp

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

Sambhar/curry powder – 1 tsp

Pav Bhaji masala – ½ tsp

Garam masala – ½ tsp

Turmeric powder – ½ tsp

Salt

Note:

You can use 1 tsp each of red chilli powder and coriander powder and ¼ tsp of either of sambhar/Indian curry powder, Garam Masala or Pav Bhaji masala instead of the spices mentioned above

Method:

Wash cabbage well

Finely chop both cabbage and capsicum

Sprinkle some water over chopped cabbage and microwave for 4-5 mins in two batches of 2-3 mins each. Mix once in between

Cover with a lid and keep aside

Microwave chopped capsicum and green peas together for 2 mins – twice, a minute each time

Heat oil and splutter cumin seeds

Add the vegetables, turmeric and spice powders and salt

Mix well and sauté for a few mins

Take off heat and serve as a side dish with rice or with rotis (Indian breads)

    I don’t “do” microwaves…honestly I’ve lived without it for so long I wouldn’t know how to use it anymore. I love this recipe! I’m heading for the Balkans soon, I’m looking very much forward to bringing some beautiful ingredients home..
